A very well-made example of a compound marine engine, believed to have been built to the Clarkson design. A rare model which are rarely seen assembled and working, based on a 1960s/70s set of drawings (and possibly castings, although no maker/ manufacturer name visible). According to the original Clarkson's Catalogue (available via Blackgate Engineering's website), the Vertical Compound Launch Engine:

"[...] has been designed at the request of numerous overseas customers who require an engine of greater power and more varied use, with longer life main bearings than 2" × 2" engine upon which it is based. It is just about as robust, using many parts of the 2" x 2" vertical, the main bearings are 3/4"x 1.1/2" and the crankshaft is balanced. It is simple in conception and construction, but is capable of many detail refinements and is suitable for the amateur and for training establishments."

The engine turns over freely and has general use-wear, including light grime which could be polished off. Fit and finish is good and the engine has been mounted together with a shaft driven water pump. An impressive sized model which would suit a marine launch project or stand as an excellent display piece.

6 inch diameter spoked flywheel. Overall height approximately 15 1/2 inches, Length of Engine (not including shaft) approximately 12 inches.
