An interesting and increasingly scarce military-style portable steam generating set, comprising a Stuart-built enclosed Sirius engine coupled to an ALCO boiler unit, complete with its original transport chest and accessories. Produced in very small numbers, estimates are around 400, with 200 having been disposed by the military after the war, and the rest likely in strategic reserve.
Designed as a compact field steam plant which could be parachute dropped behind enemy lines, the set appears substantially complete and retains many of its original components, including the boiler assembly, engine unit, pipework, pressure gauge, exhaust stack and fitted carrying case with labelled storage positions. The engine remains mounted within its protective frame and presents well with its original military green finish.
The transport chest contains various pipes and fittings, all neatly stowed in their original clips and brackets. The overall presentation suggests the set has been carefully stored for many years and would make an excellent restoration project, display piece or addition to a collection of military, engineering or steam-related equipment.
Condition
- Boiler is untested and has not been pressure tested.
- Mechanical condition of the engine has not been assessed in detail.
- Sold as a restoration/display item and should be inspected by a competent person before any attempt is made to steam or operate the unit.
- Signs of age, storage wear, surface corrosion and cosmetic blemishes commensurate with age.
A fascinating piece of portable steam engineering with strong display appeal and considerable potential for sympathetic restoration.
