A substantial and very impressive model engineer-built vertical live steam boiler, constructed by B. Ross and dated 1970, with the maker’s oval plaque reading “B. Ross – 1970 – Arley Nr Coventry.”
This is a particularly large and heavy example, weighing approximately 27.5kg, and has a very attractive traditional appearance with a wooden-lagged boiler barrel, brass retaining bands, extensive copper pipework and black-painted smokebox/firebox fittings.
The boiler is fitted with numerous valves and associated fittings, including a pressure gauge, water gauge/sight glass, feed/steam pipework and what appears to be a hand-operated pump arrangement mounted towards the base. The lower firebox has a substantial hinged firehole door, with a separate opening section to the base giving access to the grate and firebox. A tall removable chimney is also included.
The boiler itself measures approximately 54cm high to the top of the chimney socket, as shown in the photographs, with the main body approximately 21cm across and boiler diameter 16cm. The chimney adds considerable additional height when fitted.
A fascinating piece of vintage model engineering which would make an impressive boiler for a large stationary steam plant, workshop display or restoration project.
There is surface rust and corrosion to the firebox/base and grate area, together with paint loss, tarnishing and general marks consistent with its age and previous use. The wooden lagging remains particularly attractive.
IMPORTANT: This boiler has not been hydraulically or steam tested, and no current boiler certificate is supplied. Its internal condition and suitability for steaming are therefore unknown. It should be professionally inspected and appropriately tested before any attempt is made to fire or pressurise it.
